4th of July Firework Safety

As our country begins to celebrate its Independence, exciting festivities are beginning. Throughout these holiday activities, it is important to make smart, safe decisions and protocols, especially when planning to handle fireworks. 

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 10,200 people were treated in hospital emergency departments for firework-related injuries in 2022. Burns were the most frequently estimated type of injury, totaling 38% of all emergency department-treated fireworks injuries.

Remember, it is always best to attend a public firework show that is managed by professionals. If you are setting fireworks off at home, American Red Cross has provided five fireworks safety tips for you to follow to ensure that everyone is protected this holiday.

1. Never give fireworks to small children, and never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures, or flammable materials. Always follow the instructions on the packaging. 
2. Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. 
3. Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. 
4. Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight a “dud.”
5. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
